Welcome to a new feature in Dialogue: A Question We Hear All the Time. In future issues, we’ll answer common questions to help you navigate CPSO processes and requirements. This issue’s question:

Do I need to renew my corporation separately from my licence?

Yes. If you've incorporated a Medicine Professional Corporation (MPC), you'll need a Certificate of Authorization for your MPC from CPSO. This certificate is separate from your CPSO certificate of registration (licence) and has its own application, renewal process, fees, and timelines. One of the most common questions we receive is how to apply for a certificate for your MPC or renew one when it comes due.

Applying for a Certificate of Authorization for Your MPC

After incorporating your MPC, apply for your MPC’s Certificate of Authorization (also referred to as a “COA”) through the CPSO Portal.

Before applying, make sure you have:

  • A valid CPSO licence to practice medicine in Ontario.
  • Your Certificate of Incorporation.
  • A Corporation Profile Report (an uncertified version from any online website providing this service) dated within the last 30 days.

To apply:

  • Log in to the Portal and select Profile > Corporations.
  • Click Corporation Services.
  • Complete the application and upload the required documents.
  • Pay the $400 application fee.

Once your application is approved, you can request a copy of your certificate through the Portal.

Renewing the Certificate of Authorization for Your MPC

Your MPC’s certificate must be renewed separately from your CPSO certificate of registration (licence). MPC renewal has its own deadline and renewal process, which will be tied to the date you originally received your certificate, and occurs outside the process for your annual licence renewal.

We'll send you a reminder through the Portal 45 days before your renewal deadline.

To renew:

  • Log in to the Portal.
  • Go to Profile > Corporations.
  • Select your corporation number.
  • Click Renew Certificate and follow the instructions.
  • Upload a Corporation Profile Report (an uncertified version from any online website providing this service) dated within the last 30 days.
  • Pay the $175 renewal fee.

If your MPC’s certificate is not renewed within 60 days of the renewal deadline, it will be revoked. While this does not affect your CPSO licence to practise, without a valid certificate, your corporation can no longer operate as a Medicine Professional Corporation, which can have tax implications and may create issues with banking, insurance, contractual, or other business arrangements that rely on a valid certificate.
